Little Girl And Big Horse, Defiance, Iowa

Little Girl And Big Horse Defiance Iowa pc1Little Girl And Big Horse Defiance Iowa pc2

Oh! I hadn’t realized I had two by this photographer. Excellent! It’s a great one of a pretty girl (gazing downward) in coat, gloves and hat (how do you like that big pom pom, not to mention the big bow outside the coat?) She’s standing on a wooden mounting block, next to a beautiful horse (that sweet expression!), and she’s holding onto the reigns with one hand. It’s maybe late winter, early spring, the ground is wet and muddy. We see a conglomeration of buildings in the background. It’s not very affluent-looking, maybe these are farm buildings, but then it looks like we might have a main city street running behind them. For some reason I think England when I look at this photo. Don’t know why. The photo artist’s stamp on the back shows:

“Photo By Jessie Westbrook, Defiance, Iowa.”

See the prior post for more on Miss Jessie Westbrook.

Divided back, unused Real Photo Postcard. Photographer:  Jessie Westbrook. Circa 1914 – 1917.

Price:  $15.00

Another Horse And Buggy RPPC

Another Horse And Buggy RPPC pc1Another Horse And Buggy RPPC pc2

Another Real Photo Postcard with horse and buggy:  this one showing two gents in suits and derby hats. It looks to be maybe late winter, as the trees in the background are not leafed out yet. Also showing is a utility pole, and a house (or church or school?) with a cupola. We see some buildings further back:  the one on the left makes us think this is farm land.

The always helpful Playle.com website dates this particular Sailboat stamp box as from year 1908.

Divided back, unused, Real Photo Postcard. Sailboat stamp box, circa 1908.

Price:  $4.00

Horse And Buggy Couple

Horse And Buggy Couple pc1Horse And Buggy Couple pc2

“12 1/2 of these”  appears written in pencil on the back of this Real Photo Postcard. Hmmm, maybe this was photography lingo for twelve “half-size” or something to this effect. But it’s a beautiful photo of a young couple posing for the camera, seated in their buggy, with horse hitched, ready to start or resume a jaunt in the country. There are some nice details to pick out:  hats for both (of course) the young lady’s is a fairly wide-brimmed straw topped with flowers; a pin-striped suit and bow-tie for the gent; and they are cozy under a fringed lap coverlet (perhaps it was morning, with a little chill in the air.)

Divided back, unused with writing, Real Photo Postcard. Circa 1910.

Price:  $10.00

A Beautiful Mother And Daughter Photo

A Beautiful Mother And Daughter Photo pc1A Beautiful Mother And Daughter Photo pc2

At first glance one might think these ladies could be sisters, just because the woman on the right is young-looking, but really, no, this is a mother-daughter pose. They both appear to be wearing wedding rings, so perhaps the photo was taken not long after the young lady on the left was married. (That sad, wistful expression! And one wonders whether the photographer cultivated the expression, if cultivated is the word, as in, if this was a going-away shot:  the young lady is sad to leave her mother, the mother is proud of her beautiful daughter) But the clothes! The daughter:  the dress with sailor-style neckline with the striped (blue and white?) collar and cuffs, and the adorable little dark-rimmed hat that we can’t see much of. The mother:  goodness (!) the lace is stunning. Is it Broderie Anglaise? And would the collar be described as long-lapeled? I must admit I feel sadly lacking in education when internet-searching for fabric types, styles, etc.

Divided back, unused, Real Photo Postcard. AZO stamp box. Circa 1907 – 1918.

Price:  $15.00

Ushering In Easter

Ushering In Easter tc1Ushering In Easter tc2

Trade card, lithograph for The Fleischmann Co., Form No. 910A. Made in Germany. Circa mid-1880s – 1890s.

Price:  $10.00        Size:  3 and 1/2 x 5 and 1/2″

There’s the Easter Bunny and one Easter egg behind the young gentleman in the flared double-breasted coat with the wide lapels, checkered pants, top hat and walking cane, with gloves in hand. It’s a spring day, the lilies of the valley are in bloom, and the flowing red lines appearing from “underneath” the scene, as well as the flowing lines of the lilies of the valley, are very Art Nouveau; a beautiful advertising piece from the Fleischmann Company. A “Handsome Banner Picture” could be obtained in exchange for 50 Yellow Labels taken from the cakes of their Compressed Yeast.

Exactly what is meant by “banner picture” is not quite clear. And an internet search did not illuminate the answer.

As to the time-frame for the card, perhaps mid-1880s to 1890s.  An entry in New York City directories in 1886 shows,  “Fleischmann Maximilian, yeast, 701 Washn. & 219 E. 23d, h. 115 Madison av.”  which half-way matches the address given on the back of the card as 699-701 Washington St. The exact address given is proving hard to find in online sources, surprisingly. Newspaper ads show the 701 Washington address at least into the late 1920s. And numerous entries in various years show both “Fleischmann & Co.” and “The Fleischmann Co.”

Sleigh Ride, 1916

Sleigh Ride 1916 p1Sleigh Ride 1916 p2

Winter fun one hundred years ago to the month!

It says “Jan 1916”  on the back of this wonderful black and white photo, which shows four ladies and three men (perhaps the driver jumped down to capture the moment) all bundled up for the weather with long overcoats and hats, riding in a horse or mule-drawn sleigh. The location is unknown; a small town probably somewhere in the U.S. When was the last time you went on a sleigh ride?

Corey & Stewart, Newark, NJ

Corey & Stewart Newark NJ tc1Corey & Stewart Newark NJ tc2

“Corey & Stewart, Fashionable Hatters and Furriers. 711 & 713 Broad Street. Newark, N. J.”

As of the date of this post, no other trade cards were found online for Corey & Stewart, which is a little surprising because they were a very successful firm. It’s another lithograph print by Bufford (new category going up) and a great design, in black on pale green, of the Roman ruins of Pompeii in the moonlight with an insert of a very fashionable couple on horseback.

The wonderfully detailed description below (we expect nothing less from the time period it was written, but thank you) is from William F. Ford’s The Industrial Interests of Newark, N. J….(1874) and reveals that Corey & Stewart was established in 1852 by James W. Corey, who was joined by James H. Stewart in 1863.

1868 and 1869 directories show they were located at 232 Broad Street, and by 1870 at 711 – 713 Broad St. The old address is also noted in the above directory ad. Listings were found for Corey & Stewart through the year 1896.

Scottish Lass Trade Card

Scottish Lass Trade Card tc1

Victorian Era trade card. Washington registered trade mark. Circa 1889 – 1890s. Condition:  Poor, regrettably, due to top middle piece having become torn away from the whole; creases in top and bottom left corners; top right corner missing.

Size:  4 and 1/2 x 6 and 1/2″

Price:  $7.00

A beautiful red-haired lassie in Rob Roy MacGregor-Black (?) plaid skirt and jacket, and a tam-o-shanter with red wings, holds a peacock feather-designed fan. She is posed standing on a path in the forest, with her arm draped protectively around a lamb, who rests just next to her on a grassy ledge. Girl and lamb are looking off to their right. The design ends up to be a little comical – it appears that the lamb wears a little pointed hat (!) but really that is just the bonny lassie’s arm showing through her sleeve – her long sleeves being slit almost up to the shoulder. Very stylish!

At the bottom of this Victorian Era trade card is the wording:   Washington. And then in smaller print, “Trade Mark Registered.”  What is meant by Washington? Our best guess is that it’s one of a series of cards for each state in the Union. Washington became as state November 11, 1889.

“Wild Bill” Hickok

Wild Bill Hickok pc1Wild Bill Hickok pc2

“77 – ‘Wild Bill,’ winner of 32 pistol duels, the quickest and best shot that ever lived. Buried in Mt. Moriah Cemetery, Deadwood, Black Hills, S.D.”

James Butler “Wild Bill” Hickok, (1837 – 1876) was a law enforcer, gambler and folk hero of the Old West. Since so much has already been written about “Wild Bill,” we turned our attention to the question of when this postcard may have been produced. The front shows  “Copyrighted 1908 by W. B. Perkins, Jr.”  William Bradford Perkins, Jr. was a photographer who lived in the Lead area, Lawrence County, SD, and he must have bought or otherwise acquired the rights to this image, since Find A Grave  shows Perkins was born in 1863 and died in 1914.

The flip side of the postcard shows  “Distributed by Black Hills Post Card Co., Deadwood, S.D.”  and the well known publisher/printer Curteich with  “Genuine Curteich-Chicago ‘C.T. American Art’ Post Card (Reg. U.S. Pat. Off.)”  According to the oft-visited MetroPostcard site, the Black Hills Post Card Company operated from 1919 – 1952. This card is “non-linen” though, so it may be more likely to be pre-1930. Also, the number “77” appearing on the front does not seem to fit any years for Curteich’s own numbering system which would have been helpful in dating the postcard.

Divided back, unused postcard. Circa 1919 – 1930. Copyright W. B. Perkins, Jr. Distributed by Black Hills Post Card Co., Deadwood, S.D. Publisher info:  Genuine Curteich-Chicago “C.T. American Art” Post Card (Reg. U.S. Pat. Off.)

A match….

An image of the original photo that this postcard was produced from can be found online on more than one website (source unknown) however, the second photo below appears to have been taken around the same time frame. Note the same (or very similarly styled hat and jacket) but different pants, shirt and chair.
