The Henderson Sisters, Oakland CA, 1912

The Henderson Sisters Oakland CA 1912 pc1The Henderson Sisters Oakland CA 1912 pc2

“This is the Henderson sisters. Emma’s place is not finished yet but expects to move down next week. Mary is not feeling well but all the rest of the bunch are alright. Love from all, hope you are feeling good. Flora.”

Addressed to:   “Mrs. Reiterman, 177 – Page st., San Francisco, Calif.”

Well, the first names of the Henderson girls weren’t found, Henderson being a fairly common name, for one thing. Then also, the family may not have stayed in Oakland, the presumed city this photograph was taken in. But it’s such a cute photo, and there they are standing/sitting in clover, with the house border’s roses and gladiolas behind them.

The Reiterman Family was found at the address on the postcard in the 1912 city directory. And from the 1920 Federal Census for the same address we find that the addressee is Mrs. Mary F. Reiterman, born California about 1866; married to William J.Reiterman, born California about 1864, his occupation Cutter in the furnishing goods industry; their sons are William A., Neil D. and Percy (ages 32 – 27 on this census).

Franica 1918

Franica 1918 p1Franica 1918 p2

This area looks like the California Central Valley or the San Jose, CA area near the mountains, before all the development, when much of that area was orchards. And it’s a beautiful photo, very artistic, of little Franica, who looks to be about two years old, in her polka dot dress and knit cap. The given name Franica is not a common one, and in searching the 1920 Federal Census’ in the U.S. there are only about twenty entries that could possibly fit for someone born 1915 – 1918, none coming up in California; of course, it could well have been taken in some other state or even country. But in any case, a pretty name for a pretty girl.

Colby & Wilson Cabinet Card, Meredith, NH

Colby & Wilson Cabinet Card Meredith NH cc1Colby & Wilson Cabinet Card Meredith NH cc2

Cabinet Card photo of a little boy, (love the expression) about three years old, posed standing with hands in pockets, dressed in a long wool-looking coat with contrasting darker-colored cuffs and collar, the collar buttoned snug at the neck, and a winter hat with tassel. Someone, at some point, took the liberty of filling in the eyebrows and darkening the eyes a little.

It’s more probable than not that the little boy in this photo is the son of Fred Canney, according to the writing on the back which shows,  “Mrs. Fred Canney. Meredith, N.H.”  If this is correct, then it’s possible that this is a photo of Wilfred A. Canney, born about 1883; son of Fred Canney and Annie Martin. Wilfred married Alice B. Cummings on December 1, 1908 in Meredith, NH.

The photography studio of Colby & Wilson is more of a mystery. Nothing was found in online searches other than an image of the reverse side of one of their cabinet cards, currently appearing on Pinterest, though there are several possibilities showing up for individual photographers in other New Hampshire cities.

Compliments Of Jimmie To Mrs. Carrie Hoagland

Compliments Of Jimmie To Mrs Carrie Hoagland cdv1Compliments Of Jimmie To Mrs Carrie Hoagland cdv2

Carte de Visite. Photo of Jimmie to a Mrs. Carrie Hoagland. Circa 1870s.

Price:  $5.00        Size:  About 2 and 1/4 x 3 and 1/2″

A Carte de Visite photo from about the 1870s….of Jimmie to a Mrs. Carrie Hoagland. Just look at that beautiful handwriting! Jimmie, a nice-looking young man with a heartbreakingly sad expression, (awww, hugs) wears a suit coat with wide lapels, a white shirt and a short necktie, and looks to be about sixteen or so. Was this a school photo given to his teacher? Carrie, Caroline or Carolina Hoagland (Mrs.) – wow, there are far too many possibilities under this name. What might give us a clue is the second word that is scribbled over at the bottom – if anyone can decipher it! I came up with some crazy words that when Googling, were identified, for example, as a fictional place in the land of Mario Bros. (hee hee) or the name of a Brazilian steel tube maker (lordy). But it seems like it might be a last name, as the first word there looks like “Hannah.” And maybe it was written around the same time that Jimmie signed the card – the “H” is in the same style.

Frank McMullen, Dayton, Ohio, 1894

Frank McMullen Dayton 1894 cdv1Frank McMullen Dayton 1894 cdv2

A handsome young man signed, dated and identified his location on the back of this Carte de Visite:   “Your Friend. Frank McMullen. Dayton O. 9/22/84.”

If Frank is about eighteen in this photo, he would have been born about 1866. An 1880 Federal Census record for Dayton, Ohio, shows young Frank, about age 15 (born about 1865) living with his sister, Eva (McMullen) Hanitch; brother-in-law Henry Hanitch, and nephew, three-month-old Walter Hanitch. The address for the family is 207 Water St.

The 1870 census for German Township (about 33 miles southwest of Dayton) shows more McMullens:  Anne, age 37; Eva, age 16; Emma, age 7, as well as Frank, age 5. They are living with the Schaeffer family, and presumably, Anne McMullen is the mother. This record fits since we have Eva and Frank, and also ties into a later Dayton city directory (1893) that shows Ann (the widow of John and confirming Anne as the mother), Frank and younger sister Emma, living at 136 N. Sunset Avenue, in Dayton. In 1893 Frank is working as a traveling salesman for Thresher & Co.

A much earlier Dayton city directory (1881) shows Frank working as a clerk at 17 S. Main St., boarding at 207 W. Water, between Wilkinson and Liberty. So, Frank was out in the work force at least as early as about age sixteen.

Miss Francis Burgin

Miss Francis Burgin cdv1Miss Francis Burgin cdv2

This Carte de Visite, circa 1859, was found in an antique shop in San Juan Bautista, California. Though the descendants are named on the back as grandson Philip McArthur and great-grandson Neil McArthur, no match was found online for Francis (possibly spelled Frances) Burgin and family. But it’s amazing to have this much information – quite out of the ordinary! And what is that plume-like object that Francis holds in her right hand? Upon closer inspection it looks like it may be a hat with a plume or fur top and a wide dark band.

Note:  Probably the original size was 4 x 1/2″ but for some reason the right-hand side of the card was trimmed.

“Aunt Louise & Uncle Sylvester Furtado. One of six sisters including my mother Caroline. 1908.”

From an Ancestry.com tree with photos, we were able to easily match up this married couple who are:  Louise (Baptista) Furtado, (1876 – 1979) born in California, and Sylvester Furtado (1874 – 1953) born in o Jorge, Azores, Portugal.

The photographer’s stamp on the back of this Real Photo Postcard shows:

“E. Bambocci. Premiato Con. 21 Medalie D’Oro. 27 North Market St., San Jose, Cal.”

A 1910 San Jose city directory reveals that this was Enrico Bambocci, 27 N. Market, residence address 271 San Augustine. A quick search shows a long career in photography for Enrico and we’ll find out more in the next post.  “Premiato Con. 21 Medalie D’Oro”  translates from Italian as  “With Award-Winning 21 Gold Medals.”

Five Friends

Addressed to:   “Ora W. Carrell. 514 W. 8th St., Muscatine, Iowa.”

“Dear Ora: – Isn’t this cute! Claude Lewis is the one you don’t know. Taken in the woods the 27th of Dec. I had such a jolly time. Your letter came after I had written mine so this is in answer. Such lovely Xmas gifts you recd. Our[?] revival mtgs. closed Sunday – the com. gave me a check for $25.00 for my work in the meeting – I am going to get commentaries..?..? 90 at the alter and some of these were both reclaimed & sanctified, 13 now have united with the church and there will be others. A big task[?] I have to keep these going. pray. God bless thee in thy work. Sincerely – N.[?] Blanche.”

This photo really is cute. Adorable! Enlarge to see the special “headgear” they are all wearing! The fellows look like they could be related – wonder which one is Claude Lewis? And the ladies – the two on the left look like they could be sisters, or like our title says, they could all simply be five friends.

As to further i.d. – There are several possibilities for Claude Lewis; and for the sender N[?] Blanche we’d really need more information; but Ora W. Carrell is likely the same person found on the 1910 Federal Census under O. W. Carrell, showing born in Iowa about 1886, single, rooming in the household of Webster A. and Tracy M. Allman, and who’s occupation is listed as Gospel Minister. The address in Muscatine is 308 5th St., just several blocks away from the address given on the card.

Walter Kellington, Coney Island, 1908

Walter Kellington Coney Island 1908 pc1Walter Kellington Coney Island 1908 pc2

Walter, casually reclining for the camera, wrote,  “This is my Picture – Walter Kellington. Taking on Sunday Aug. 30/08 at Coney Island. Clear Day.”

This is very possibly the Walter E. Kellington that appears on a number of U.S. census records, as born about 1871 in New York, married to Ada Stillwagon (in 1895) and with daughter Gladys, born in NY about 1902 (from the 1920 census the family is living on Linden St. in Brooklyn, and Walter’s occupation is Printer in the newspaper industry.)

There is a Walter Kellington who shows up in the 1908 and ’09 city directories in Newark, occupation Feeder, who may or may not be the same person. The third possibility, that of Walter R. Kellington, born about 1891, doesn’t seem to fit, since we’d assume his birth year to be too late to fit the person in the photo, the 1891 person having moved to Chicago by 1900 also, so we’re left with the strong impression that the Walter Kellington born 1871, is correct.
