Real Photo Postcard, unused. AZO stamp box.

Price:  $5.00

A beautiful photo-turned-postcard of a handsome guy in profile, with white beard, in suspenders, one hand resting on hip, the other holding his straw hat and with what we might think of as the “old homestead” in the immediate background. The only identification is written on the back as,  “Grandpa McInnes.”  The stamp box is an AZO, two triangles up and two down, which is estimated anywhere between 1910 and 1930, per Playle’s. Here’s a great one for New Year’s Eve, a couple of partiers…..even though probably this was not taken in winter. Is that an open window? In any case, it’s Carl Stockdale and Mary Dowds seated on the floor and having a great laugh. We’ll have to research for the possible year according to Mary’s style of dress, for starters. But for now, just to get this one posted…..and Happy New Year!

It’s fun to pick out the details in old photos. Notice the photo within a photo on this one, top right, and the nail pattern in the sole of Carl’s shoe. (Another possible clue for the age of the photo?) And that’s a nice wallpaper pattern and then there’s the beautiful lace on the curtains.

A cute photo of Gertrude Alene Crotzer, daughter of Irvin and Ida Crotzer. Gertrude was born about August 1897 in Lena, Illinois and married Ewald A. Dominik, September 6, 1917, in Chicago, Illinois.

Cyp Bequette, Visalia, California

This is Cyprien L. Bequette, born about 1875 in Tulare County, California, son of Louis Bequette and Mary E. (Davis) Bequette. He married Cecile McKee in Tulare County April 20, 1898. He died August 25, 1911 in San Diego, California. We’re estimating Cyp might have been about ten or twelve years old when the photo was taken.

The 1910 Federal Census taken in Lemoncove,Tulare County, shows Cyp was a fruit farmer, and he and his wife Cecile had three children, Ormonde, Bruce and Myrla.

George W. Parker and William Lewis Parker

Divided back, Real Photo Postcard. September 1907. Photographer:  E. E. Flack. Alexandria Bay, New York. CYKO stamp box.

A beautiful studio photo (but was it an oversight for the floor covering not to be straightened out first?) of brothers George Washington and William Lewis Parker. That’s George on the left. A family member had nicely identified them on the back with their dates of birth and included the date the photo was taken.

“William Lewis Parker April 22, 1903. George W. Parker Dec. 16, 1907. This picture taken Sept. 19, 09.”

Per Find A Grave, their parents are Lorenzo Dow Parker and Adelaide (Thomas) Parker and George’s middle name is Washington. The photographer’s full name is Eugene E. Flack per the 1910 Federal Census for Alexandria Bay. State census records show the Parkers living in Macomb, St. Lawrence County, NY., about 25 miles northeast of Alexandria Bay.

Charley Robbins and Grace Alice Robbins

Brother and sister Charley and Grace Alice Robbins, born in Colorado to Ira Robbins and Ida (Whipp) Robbins. Grace married Raymond Narville Moore and Charley married Beatrice Wardle. We’re estimating the children were about three or four years old when each had their photo taken. Charley was born January 1903 and Grace April 1897.

Irene Francis Zink and Virgil Emerson Zink

Real Photo Postcard. AZO stamp box. 1922.

Continuing on with a kid theme before we get to some Christmas posts…..Here’s one very nicely identified as:

“Joel Cox’s grandchildren Irene Francis Zink age 3 1/2 yrs. and Virgil Emerson Zink age 11 wk.”

Per the Find A Grave entries Irene was born May 4, 1919 and Virgil March 31, 1922. Both are natives of Kansas. Parents are Virgil E. Zink and Lena M. Cox. The ages given on the back of the postcard appear to be a little off, according to their birth dates, but this photo must have been taken in 1922. And if you enlarge the image (I was admiring Irene’s dress and the crochet work for both dresses) you’ll notice that Virgil’s eyes were “enhanced” a little. This was done by the photographer at some point during the photo processing.

Fernande and Yvon Lamoureux

Two photos, deckled edges, white borders from the Lamoureux Family. Circa 1930s.

These are the last of our French-Canadian photos that were found in a box full of loose photos at the Vintage Paper Fair in San Francisco this year….That is most likely Fernande Lamoureux in the front row on our right. It looks like it was a special occasion for school or church that had the girls all lined up and posing for the photo. Notice how they must have all been told to fold their hands together. (It does make for a nice snapshot!)

Albert Leclerc and Friends

A very cute photo, and while we don’t know which child Albert is, he and his friends (and/or brothers) are all in overalls, and have stopped playing to have their picture taken. The boy on the right (a trendsetter 😉 ) wears a loosely fitted necktie, as well. But there’s something about door frames and window frames being a great place for a photo, and this image has that and also has the bonus (artistically speaking) of the one boy’s hand draping just outside the window. (If you look at old postcards a lot, you will see that the artists were always deliberately using this technique – for instance ivy or flowers flowing just outside of a rectangular border. It’s something about the flow or the feeling of added dimension.)

Young Gilles Fontaine, posing on the front porch in his double-breasted suit jacket, necktie and crew cut. The house number above the door of the duplex shows 7637 and 7635 on the adjacent home. This may have been somewhere in the Grenville, Québec or Hawkesbury, Ontario area. The two towns are across the Ottawa River from each other as showing on the map link here. And this is thanks to the “Photos Ltd” stamp on the back under which we can decipher their locations of “Hawkesbury ONT” and a town ending in “ville” QUE. (Lots of those!)
