This is Cyprien L. Bequette, born about 1875 in Tulare County, California, son of Louis Bequette and Mary E. (Davis) Bequette. He married Cecile McKee in Tulare County April 20, 1898. He died August 25, 1911 in San Diego, California. We’re estimating Cyp might have been about ten or twelve years old when the photo was taken.

The 1910 Federal Census taken in Lemoncove,Tulare County, shows Cyp was a fruit farmer, and he and his wife Cecile had three children, Ormonde, Bruce and Myrla.

Alice and Albert Wing, Waterville, Maine

Price: $12.00 Size: About 2 and 1/2 x 4 and 1/4″

Alice K. and Albert B. Wing were twins born in Maine October 23, 1863, the youngest children of Daniel R. Wing (occupation publisher on the 1880 census) and Ann E. (Burleigh) Wing. The 1880 also shows older siblings Fred, Mary, John, Flora and Daniel. We’re estimating the twins in this photo are age ten to thirteen, and by their clothing and without research or prior knowledge, one might assume Civil War Era. It’s so nice then to get a closer approximation for clothing styles in the 1870s and so nice this card survived for present-day generations of the Wing family to find (hopefully!).

And in looking for Ann’s maiden name, we found that Albert Burleigh Wing died in 1932 in Santa Cruz County, California. It makes sense then that this photo had been found in the Central Coast area of CA.

George W. Parker and William Lewis Parker

A beautiful studio photo (but was it an oversight for the floor covering not to be straightened out first?) of brothers George Washington and William Lewis Parker. That’s George on the left. A family member had nicely identified them on the back with their dates of birth and included the date the photo was taken.

Per Find A Grave, their parents are Lorenzo Dow Parker and Adelaide (Thomas) Parker and George’s middle name is Washington. The photographer’s full name is Eugene E. Flack per the 1910 Federal Census for Alexandria Bay. State census records show the Parkers living in Macomb, St. Lawrence County, NY., about 25 miles northeast of Alexandria Bay.

Charley Robbins and Grace Alice Robbins

Brother and sister Charley and Grace Alice Robbins, born in Colorado to Ira Robbins and Ida (Whipp) Robbins. Grace married Raymond Narville Moore and Charley married Beatrice Wardle. We’re estimating the children were about three or four years old when each had their photo taken. Charley was born January 1903 and Grace April 1897.

Albert Leclerc and Friends

A very cute photo, and while we don’t know which child Albert is, he and his friends (and/or brothers) are all in overalls, and have stopped playing to have their picture taken. The boy on the right (a trendsetter 😉 ) wears a loosely fitted necktie, as well. But there’s something about door frames and window frames being a great place for a photo, and this image has that and also has the bonus (artistically speaking) of the one boy’s hand draping just outside the window. (If you look at old postcards a lot, you will see that the artists were always deliberately using this technique – for instance ivy or flowers flowing just outside of a rectangular border. It’s something about the flow or the feeling of added dimension.)

Young Gilles Fontaine, posing on the front porch in his double-breasted suit jacket, necktie and crew cut. The house number above the door of the duplex shows 7637 and 7635 on the adjacent home. This may have been somewhere in the Grenville, Québec or Hawkesbury, Ontario area. The two towns are across the Ottawa River from each other as showing on the map link here. And this is thanks to the “Photos Ltd” stamp on the back under which we can decipher their locations of “Hawkesbury ONT” and a town ending in “ville” QUE. (Lots of those!)

School Photos, Québec Boys, 1950s

These individual school photos ended up in a bin at the Vintage Paper Fair in San Francisco this year near some other photos taken in Québec. French-Canadian stuff always catches my eye due to my own heritage and then, you never know if you might come across a relation’s photo (it’s happened before, alas not to me yet, but still, ever hopeful….)

Anyway, these cool guys are, from left to right, top to bottom: Robert Lamette[?], age 7 and 3 months. From the school Notre-Dame-du-Rosaire, Pierre Cloutier, age 6, 1950; Denis [?], Léo Gingras; Jacques Larose; Jules Gravel; Raymond Bélair; Jean-Guy Brisebois.

Continuing on with a French-Canadian theme (after a brief Thanksgiving/autumn interlude), here’s another that was found loose in a bin at the Vintage Paper Fair in San Francisco…..a portrait of a young woman in a waved bob hairstyle, pearl necklace and wide-lapel coat with braid appliqué on the darker collar. We’re unsure what the fabric for the coat was made from, but it was something elegant, note the shimmer where the light is reflecting on our right. And there’s no writing or other identifying information on the back, she is simply, the beautiful………Marguerite.

Young Hockey Players

It’s hockey season again, yay!

These guys are happily posing with their sticks on a frozen stream, by the looks of it. There’s a rustic wooden bridge behind them. Easy to miss in the background is an Esso gas station sign. No writing on the back but this photo was found (at the paper fair in San Francisco) in a large box of loose photos next to other ephemera of French-Canadian origin, which we’ll be posting next…..But hey, where are the guys’ skates? And one more question: Could the sticks have been handmade? Just wondering because of the lack of any company name appearing on them, especially on the goalie’s, the wider one, in the front center. And in googling Esso we discovered a major connection to the sport.

Some trivia….

First of all, did you know that the name Esso is just the pronunciation of the S and O for Standard Oil?

The first NHL game broadcast on the radio was in 1936 and was sponsored by the Esso brand.

The three stars awarded in NHL games originated as a way to advertise Imperial’s three star brand of gasoline.
