Cyp Bequette, Visalia, California

Two photos, carte-de-visite, circa 1887. Photography studio:  E. M. Davidson, Visalia, California.

 Availability status:  SOLD       Size:  2 x 3″

This is Cyprien L. Bequette, born about 1875 in Tulare County, California, son of Louis Bequette and Mary E. (Davis) Bequette. He married Cecile McKee in Tulare County April 20, 1898. He died August 25, 1911 in San Diego, California. We’re estimating Cyp might have been about ten or twelve years old when the photo was taken.

The 1910 Federal Census taken in Lemoncove,Tulare County, shows Cyp was a fruit farmer, and he and his wife Cecile had three children, Ormonde, Bruce and Myrla.

Charles G. Carleton, Photographer, Waterville, Maine

Charles G. Carleton or C. G. Carleton – photographer in Waterville, Maine 1862 thru circa 1889.

Charles G. Carleton, the photographer for the carte-de-visite in our prior post, was born in Whitefield, New Hampshire, about 1835. He had come to Waterville at least by the time the 1860 Federal Census was taken, when his occupation was listed as “dealer of books.” He established himself as a photographer in 1862 and practiced his art for a living until approximately 1889. He was well-respected in the community and said to have been one of the top photographers in the state. After 1889 we find city directory records from 1892 under the occupation of auctioneer/merchant. Examples of his photography can be found in carte-de-visite, cabinet card and stereograph format. Conflicting death dates show 1891 (Maine death record) and 1895 (gravestone marker).

Charles married Mary C. Getchell (maiden name per Ancestry.com trees) sometime after the 1860 but before the 1870 Federal Census was taken for Waterville.

Below, an ad appearing in the 1885 city directory for Waterville showing his studio address of 66 Main St.

Below, a clipping from the Bangor Daily Whig and Courier, April 14, 1891.

The last photography-type listing found online for Charles G. Carleton is from 1889. In 1892 we find him listed under the occupation of commercial merchant and auctioneer and in business with James B. Dinsmore. So, it seems sometime between 1889 and 1892 (if the 1895 death date is correct) he may have left the photography business. (Note the typo on the middle initial for Charles in the Carleton & Dinsmore line.)

Charles G. Carleton died either July 2, 1891 or 1895. The 1891 date comes from the Maine death record, along with parents’ names Willard Carleton, born in Whitefield (NH) and Clarissa Smith[?] born in Massachusetts. The 1895 date appears on his gravestone. One would think the death record would be the correct date, however, it is possible that the 1891 date had been recorded late and incorrectly, in light of the 1892 listing for him as a merchant in Waterville, and also since his name appears on another reference as one of the City Officers for the Oversears of the Poor, in 1894. Or, if the 1891 date is correct, the ’92 city directory mistakenly left off that he was deceased, and the city officer ’94 reference (not published till 1908) would have mistakenly left his name in as if still current at that time.

From the Boston Globe, September 22, 1899; wife Mary C. Carleton appears to have taken over the merchant business after Charles died. (By the 1900 census, Mary is not working and is living with her sister, Ellen.)

Alice and Albert Wing, Waterville, Maine

Carte-de-Visite, circa mid-to-late 1870s. Photographer:  C. G. Carleton, Waterville, Maine.

Price:  $12.00      Size:  About 2 and 1/2 x 4 and 1/4″

Alice K. and Albert B. Wing were twins born in Maine October 23, 1863, the youngest children of Daniel R. Wing (occupation publisher on the 1880 census) and Ann E. (Burleigh) Wing. The 1880 also shows older siblings Fred, Mary, John, Flora and Daniel. We’re estimating the twins in this photo are age ten to thirteen, and by their clothing and without research or prior knowledge, one might assume Civil War Era. It’s so nice then to get a closer approximation for clothing styles in the 1870s and so nice this card survived for present-day generations of the Wing family to find (hopefully!).

And in looking for Ann’s maiden name, we found that Albert Burleigh Wing died in 1932 in Santa Cruz County, California. It makes sense then that this photo had been found in the Central Coast area of CA.

Eugene E. Flack, Photographer

Eugene E. Flack, photographer in New York state circa 1898 – 1915.

Above, an ad from the Watertown, New York city directory in 1902.

Some brief information regarding E. E. Flack, the photographer who took the photo in our prior post:

Eugene Edward Flack was born November 18, 1872 or 1873 in Ogdensburg, New York to Elbert Homer Flack and Josephine Frances Pearce. He may have started in the photography business in his home town; the earliest city directory found online is for that city in 1898, where he is listed as boarding at 65 Morris.

By at least 1902 he had moved his photography business to Watertown, NY, residing there with his wife Harriet (Lockwood) whom he had married in April 24, 1895, and daughter, Mary who was born in 1896. The 1902 directory shows business and residence as 15 Washington. The 1905 State Census only lists his home address (though business and home could have been the same) that of 75 Franklin St.

In 1909 Eugene, Harriet and Mary moved about thirty miles north from Watertown to the small village of Alexandria Bay, on the St. Lawrence River. The Federal 1910 census shows the family living at 192 Walton St.

According to Ancestry.com family trees Eugene and Harriet appear to have divorced, and he later remarried (Mary McAfee).  The 1915 New York State Census shows he is boarding at the St. Lawrence Hotel, Alexandria Bay, and his 1918 WWI Draft Registration shows he is living in Norristown, Pennsylvania with nearest relative given as his mother, Mrs. Josephine Flack of Montgomery St., Ogdensburg, New York. Occupation for Eugene on the draft registration is clerk. The 1920 Federal Census was not found, however there is a 1930 census showing a Eugene E. Flack, photographer, and wife Mary living in Orange, New Jersey that’s a possible fit.

Eugene died in Watertown, New York, May 17, 1948.

George W. Parker and William Lewis Parker

Divided back, Real Photo Postcard. September 1907. Photographer:  E. E. Flack. Alexandria Bay, New York. CYKO stamp box.

Price:  $12.00

A beautiful studio photo (but was it an oversight for the floor covering not to be straightened out first?) of brothers George Washington and William Lewis Parker. That’s George on the left. A family member had nicely identified them on the back with their dates of birth and included the date the photo was taken.

“William Lewis Parker April 22, 1903. George W. Parker Dec. 16, 1907. This picture taken Sept. 19, 09.”

Per Find A Grave, their parents are Lorenzo Dow Parker and Adelaide (Thomas) Parker and George’s middle name is Washington. The photographer’s full name is Eugene E. Flack per the 1910 Federal Census for Alexandria Bay. State census records show the Parkers living in Macomb, St. Lawrence County, NY., about 25 miles northeast of Alexandria Bay.

Irene Francis Zink and Virgil Emerson Zink

Real Photo Postcard. AZO stamp box. 1922.

Price:  $12.00

Continuing on with a kid theme before we get to some Christmas posts…..Here’s one very nicely identified as:

“Joel Cox’s grandchildren Irene Francis Zink age 3 1/2 yrs. and Virgil Emerson Zink age 11 wk.”

Per the Find A Grave entries Irene was born May 4, 1919 and Virgil March 31, 1922. Both are natives of Kansas. Parents are Virgil E. Zink and Lena M. Cox. The ages given on the back of the postcard appear to be a little off, according to their birth dates, but this photo must have been taken in 1922. And if you enlarge the image (I was admiring Irene’s dress and the crochet work for both dresses) you’ll notice that Virgil’s eyes were “enhanced” a little. This was done by the photographer at some point during the photo processing.

Fernande and Yvon Lamoureux

Two photos, deckled edges, white borders from the Lamoureux Family. Circa 1930s.

Price for both:  $10.00

These are the last of our French-Canadian photos that were found in a box full of loose photos at the Vintage Paper Fair in San Francisco this year….That is most likely Fernande Lamoureux in the front row on our right. It looks like it was a special occasion for school or church that had the girls all lined up and posing for the photo. Notice how they must have all been told to fold their hands together. (It does make for a nice snapshot!)

Below, Fernande and little brother Yvon, at home.

Albert Leclerc and Friends

Photo, deckled edge, white border. Circa 1940s – 1950s.

Price:  $5.00      Size:  3 and 1/2 x 3 and 1/2″

A very cute photo, and while we don’t know which child Albert is, he and his friends (and/or brothers) are all in overalls, and have stopped playing to have their picture taken. The boy on the right (a trendsetter 😉 ) wears a loosely fitted necktie, as well. But there’s something about door frames and window frames being a great place for a photo, and this image has that and also has the bonus (artistically speaking) of the one boy’s hand draping just outside the window. (If you look at old postcards a lot, you will see that the artists were always deliberately using this technique – for instance ivy or flowers flowing just outside of a rectangular border. It’s something about the flow or the feeling of added dimension.)

Gilles Fontaine, 1950s

Photo, white border, circa 1950s.

Price:  $8.00       Size:  2 and 3/4″ x 3 and 3/4″

Young Gilles Fontaine, posing on the front porch in his double-breasted suit jacket, necktie and crew cut. The house number above the door of the duplex shows 7637 and 7635 on the adjacent home. This may have been somewhere in the Grenville, Québec or Hawkesbury, Ontario area. The two towns are across the Ottawa River from each other as showing on the map link here. And this is thanks to the “Photos Ltd” stamp on the back under which we can decipher their locations of “Hawkesbury ONT” and a town ending in “ville” QUE. (Lots of those!)
